Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370492 AB OBJECTIVE: Observation of the process of data collection for the research project entitled sexual practices and consciousness-raising about AIDS: an investigation of homosexual and bisexual behavior, in an effort to improve strategies for recruitment of subjects into investigations of hard-to-reach populations. METHODOLOGY: We performed: (a) participant observation during the interviews; (b) analysis of the content of the written observations for each questionnaire, which describe the experiences of the researchers during the interview. RESULTS: Such analyses reveal aspects of the relationship developed between the interviewer and the interviewer, such as the degree of confidence and intimacy, not perceptible when looking solely at the quantitative data. Such information led us to pay more attention to methodological aspects of the field work, particularly with reference to subjective data. CONCLUSIONS: The closeness of the relationship necessary between the interviewer and the interviewee requires constant care during the collection of data, because it involves psychological, political and cultural aspects which complement the more quantitative and objective data, and contribute towards a more complete analysis of the results, particularly when sexual identity and clandestine sexual practices are involved.
